Several non-resident Indian students in the UAE and Kuwait have shown interest in taking up a degree course in biomedical engineering, being started this year at the Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering in Sri Perumbudur, Chennai.
The college has been promoted by Gulf Returnees Educational Society, comprising about 100 NRIs who have settled back home for good.
Also on offer are degree courses in electronics and communication engineering, information technology, computer science and engineering, and electrical and electronics engineering, said Dr G. George, a founder member and secretary of the society, while on a brief visit to the UAE.
"Biomedical engineering is one of the newest disciplines now in great demand in the West, and has been launched with a curriculum in line with that offered in the United States," he said.
Only four other centres in India reportedly offer the subject at present.
The visitors plan to tour Bahrain and Kuwait to spread awareness among NRI students about the various higher education opportunities in India.
