A jobless man who was promised money for helping to steal a mobile phone went emptyhanded and has been jailed for six months.

R.H.A., 19, from Pakistan, was convicted by the Dubai Court of First Instance for taking part in the robbery. His friend who escaped with the phone is still at large.

An Indian businessman notified the police that his son had had his mobile phone stolen on a family day out in Al Muraqqabat on July 9. His son was outdoors playing when the two Pakistani men approached the boy and snatched his mobile.

The victim chased the mugger but was pelted with stones before the thief vanished.

R.H.A. waited for his accomplice to return before walking away. The police caught up with R.H.A. who admitted that his friend had planned to sell the stolen phone and give him half of the money.
