Dubai: A salesman and two housemaids were charged with armed robbery on Wednesday after tying up an elderly victim and carting away Dh200,000 worth of jewellery from a house in Mirdif.

The suspects, all Sri Lankans, allegedly assaulted and bound up M.T., a 64-year-old housewife, using a table cloth, and stole valuables from the apartment.

The victim testified that the prime suspects, a 27-year-old salesman and two housemaids — one 25 while the other 27 — broke into the apartment at around 11am on March 20, while she and her one-and-a-half-year-old grandson were in the house.

“I heard someone knocking. I opened the door thinking it was the man who brings bottled water. But I was surprised to see two women and a man. The man pushed me inside the apartment,” the victim told prosecutors.

According to the victim’s testimony, one of housemaids covered her head with a bag made of fabric, while the other housemaid forcibly took her grandson away from her grip before knocking her down to the floor.

According to the charge sheet, the trio used a table cloth to tie the victim’s hands and feet.

To stop the victim from screaming for help, the man placed his hand over her mouth. When she bit one of his fingers and screamed for help, he molested her, brought another piece of cloth and tied it around her mouth and head until she fainted.

Half an hour later, M.T. woke up to find that they stole the family’s jewellery.

According to the prosecutors’ report, the victim recognised one of her assailants, having seen one of the maids frequently visiting her building.

Investigations led the police to the suspects’ location.

The three suspects were jointly charged with armed robbery and breaking into private property.

The next hearing is July 11.
