Arab artistes who have made exceptional contributions to music will have their accomplishments recognised by a newly-launched institution, the Arabian Music Academy.

Known as the AMA, it will promote and safeguard the Arab music industry in the Middle East and North Africa. It is endorsed by Dubai Media City (DMC) and the Dubai government.

The fledging organisation will organise the first Arabian Music Awards in Dubai on May 15, which come as part of a long-list of activities to honour the accomplishments of Arab artiste.

The membership-driven regional organisation will lead campaigns on critical issues affecting the Arab music community and consumers.

Speaking at the launch, Shuckri Bundakji, Chairman of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), said: "As part of our programme, we have planned several activities. The music awards will be based on listeners' votes, and not on sales figures or chart positions.

The awards will be an annual event and aim to recognise excellence and creating greater public awareness of the cultural diversity and contributions of Arab recording artistes."

He added: "Ziad Batal of 'All 4 Productions' will produce the Arabian Music Awards. The people who've made a significant contribution in the Arab Music Industry will be honoured during a gala function on May 14.

AMA will also recognise individuals who have made contributions in spreading the Arabian musical culture internationally such as Pascal Negre, Miles Copeland and others.

Carl Abou Malham, of Warner Music said: "AMA will also organise a series of educational workshops throughout the year."
