The Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (Adco) has awarded an estimated $300 million engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to Italy's Snamprogetti to upgrade production facilities at the Bu Hasa field, confirmed officials yesterday.

The Bu Hasa project involves construction of a new degasification plant with capacity of 730,000 barrels per day (bpd) and replacement of the existing two-phase gas separators, each of 50,000 bpd, by four new three-phase separators.

"After evaluation of the revised bids, Snamprogetti has been awarded the contract," a senior Adco official told Gulf News.

He added: "The project is part of our plans to upgrade crude oil production."

The others in the race were JGC Corporation of Japan, Technip-Coflexip of France and UAE's National Petroleum Construction Co (NPCC), Saipem of Italy and Flour Daniel and Petrofac International, both of the U.S.

"Work on the project will start soon and completion is set for first quarter of 2006," he said. Parsons International of the U.S. was the consultant for the project.

Abu Dhabi is building up sustainable capacity (despite lower production due to Opec-led cuts) by increasing production in existing fields and bringing new ones on stream, all aimed at increasing sustainable oil capacity to 3 million bpd by 2006-07.

Abu Dhabi's current crude oil production capacity is 2.65 million bpd although average crude production has remained at around 2.1 million due to Opec quotas.
