Actress Alma Moreno to run for mayor

Actress Alma Moreno or Vanessa Lacsamana in real life, has declared her plan to run as mayor of suburban Paranaque, a post to be vacated by her estranged husband and incumbent Mayor Joey Marquez in 2004.

"I'm ready for the fight. I might not have money, but I am rich in friends who would support me," Moreno said. Calling herself as the 'nation's mother,' Moreno said she is the best candidate for mayor of Paranaque. Moreno also expected to get the support of the women voters in Paranaque, adding she has endeared herself to them while she was the first lady of Paranaque for a decade.

Moreno said she has been helping out poor housewives in Paranaque City much before she announced her intention to run as mayor, adding that women's vote can make a candidate win in Paranaque.

Moreno, known as a bold actress in the 80s, has been credited for getting votes for her husband when he ran as mayor of Paranaque. "I have a mission to serve the people.

My candidacy is just an instrument to realise this assignment given to me because I don't want to fail the people of Paranaque," Moreno said.

She will be challenging members of the Olivarez family, known as Paranaque's main political clan for decades. Marquez is reportedly running for Congress to represent Paranaque's lone district.
