Abu Dhabi unveils logo for 2027 World Congress of the Deaf

The official logo for the 2027 World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf has been revealed, marking the start of preparations for the event’s first edition in the Arab region. The announcement came at the closing ceremony of the 5th World Federation of the Deaf Conference in Nairobi, Kenya.

The winning design was created by Husam Mohammad Elfara, a Deaf designer from Jordan, and was chosen from entries submitted by Deaf artists around the world. The Congress will be hosted in Abu Dhabi from 19 to 23 September 2027, bringing together more than 2,000 participants from across the globe.

Global gathering in Abu Dhabi

Organised by the Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination (ZHO) in partnership with the UAE Deaf Association, the Congress will be held under the theme “Sign Languages: Always and Everywhere”. The event aims to celebrate national sign languages, encourage collaboration across borders, and strengthen the role of sign language in promoting equality.

Submissions for the logo competition came from 14 countries, with 41 designs entered. The Middle East region saw active participation, including entries from Palestine, the UAE, Jordan, Sudan, Bahrain, Lebanon, and Yemen. Designs were also submitted from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Morocco, India, Iran, the USA, and Pakistan. Nineteen designs were shortlisted before Elfara’s entry was selected.

Design inspired by culture and unity

The logo combines symbols of Deaf culture with elements of Emirati heritage. At its centre is an open hand, recognised internationally as a symbol of sign language and Deaf identity, representing communication and inclusion. Surrounding the hand is a circular motif inspired by traditional Emirati patterns, signifying unity and cultural pride. The text appears in both Arabic and English to highlight accessibility and inclusivity.

Abdullah Abudalee Al Humaidan, General Secretary of ZHO, said hosting the Congress in Abu Dhabi reflects the UAE’s commitment to inclusion. “This event will highlight the UAE’s vision of empowering people of determination and breaking down barriers. The unveiling of this logo marks the beginning of a journey that will bring together Deaf communities from around the world to share, inspire, and build a more inclusive future.”

Musabah Saeed Al Neyadi, Chair of the Organising Committee and representative of the Deaf communities, said the Congress will be a celebration of identity and language. “The new logo, created by a Deaf designer from our region, reflects our values of openness and unity,” he said.

Dr. Joseph J. Murray, President of the World Federation of the Deaf, said the event will set new standards for inclusion and innovation. “This Congress is where Deaf communities come together to share knowledge and advocate for rights. Abu Dhabi’s hosting will be a milestone for the movement worldwide.”

The 2027 Congress is expected to serve as a platform for exchange, advocacy, and cultural celebration, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s growing role as a hub for global events and inclusion initiatives.
