Fifteen pedestrian subways are being built at a cost of Dh90 million by the Abu Dhabi Municipality and Town Planning Department, bringing the number to 22, said Saeed Tarees Al Mazroui, Assistant Undersecretary of the department.

Al Mazroui said data show that most traffic accident victims are pedestrians. "So we always endeavour to improve the crossing of roads and to ease the traffic flow." Studies show that subways are the best options. "Subways are not the least costly nor the easiest option, but there is an urgent need to build subways which provide better safety and traffic flow," Al Mazroui said.

Seven subways have been completed - three under the Western Corniche, two under Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum Road, and one each under Zayed The Second and Al Falah roads, said Abdullah Salem Al Kuthairy, head of the Road Section.

The subways include four under Sheikh Hamdan Road, three under Zayed The Second Road, two under Zayed The First Road and one under Al Ain Road. Each subway will be 40 metres long. Work started on January 1 and will be completed in early October 2003.
