Bookshop in Dubai organises a story-telling session in support of MSF
The Bookworm bookshop (at Al Safa Complex, Jumeirah) is having a children's story-telling session in aid of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). On April 11, between 11.30am and 12.30pm, children between the ages of four and nine years are invited to listen to stories, and take part in the activities. Besides fund-raising, the main objective of the event is to create awareness for MSF and its projects.
"As an MSF volunteer, I thought of storytelling as a way of reaching out to various communities in Dubai. We organised the first event at the Bookworm last February, and based on its success decided to have this one in April," says Fran Light.
During the last session, Light found local teachers who were willing to read to the children. There were many nationalities who attended. A UAE national girl won the colouring competition, while two European children were the lucky winners of the drawing competition.
"It is a great opportunity for children to have an interactive morning that's educative and fun, while becoming aware of the plight of the less fortunate people around the world," explains Ruth Kiernan, manager of the bookshop.
Apart from storytelling, there will be henna application, face painting and the usual colouring and drawing competitions for children. Parents are expected to stay with the children during the hour for safety reasons. The MSF volunteers will be present to give out MSF leaflets and collect donations.
"This is a perfect way to spend some quality time with children as well as support a good cause. So come along, even if it is just for the stories, since the main idea is to spread the word about MSF, and get the community involved," emphasises Light.
