Abu Dhabi: The upper intersection of a tunnel on Al Salam Street in Abu Dhabi, near Khalifa Park, was opened on Wednesday.

A statement issued by the municipality said the intersection will facilitate traffic movement to the ‘East 48' district and the area in which the ministries are located.

The intersection includes exits with traffic signals for both outbound and inbound traffic. The outbound exits facilitate traffic movement for the motorists who want to take the inbound Abu Dhabi direction, and the inbound exits facilitate traffic movement for the motorists who want to go outbound Abu Dhabi.

This area is part of contract 2 of the Al Salam Street project, which covers land stretching from Shaikh Zayed Bridge up to Al Salam Street-Street No. 31 intersection. By opening this landmark, the overall completion rate of contract 2 will be 98 per cent, said the statement.

The Municipality of Abu Dhabi, in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ Traffic and Patrols Directorate, continues to encourage motorists to adhere to the speed limits and obey all traffic laws. Pedestrians are urged to use the crossing areas and bridges provided by the municipality.

Growing city

The Al Salam Street project will offer a state-of-the-art solution that meets the needs of a growing city. It includes upgrading the existing road to an urban expressway with a network of roads and tunnels that will lead to a smooth free-flow facility of an estimated capacity of 6,000 vehicles per hour in each direction. Upon completion of the project, motorists will be able to travel through Al Salam Street without any traffic signals from Shaikh Zayed Bridge to Mina Zayed.
