Abu Dhabi: Jet ski owners must register their vehicles in order to comply with the law and fulfil the standards of safe use in Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Police announced in a statement.

The jet skis can be registered free of cost with the Abu Dhabi Police Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Department from Sunday onwards, the statement said.

As a first step, jet ski owners must provide a certified purchase invoice, a certificate of customs release if the jet ski was imported, and an insurance policy valid for 13 months to the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport.

In the absence of a document of ownership, the Department of Transport must be consulted to obtain a letter stating the ownership of the vehicle. The cost of obtaining a valid number plate from the Department is Dh60.

Those operating jet skis in Abu Dhabi waters must also meet a few conditions. They should be at least 14 years old, unless accompanied by qualified trainers, be mentally and physically fit, know how to operate a jet ski, wear protective clothing like life jackets and helmets, and comply with public safety requirements at all times. In addition, the number of people on a jet ski should not exceed the safety limits set by the manufacturers of the vehicles, and the jet ski user must carry the license at all times.

The Department of Transport also urges jet ski users not to go beyond the territorial waters or to approach its borders, and not to approach waters reserved for swimming and beaches or reserved for the passage of ships and other marine transport.
