Dubai: Neglecting your car in Dubai can rack up fines and even see it being towed away by authorities.

Now, a number of residential areas will also start implementing Dubai Municipality’s rules about dirty cars under the ongoing My Vehicle campaign, which goes by the slogan, “Clean Vehicle…Sustainable City”.

Dubai Municipality’s waste management department held a meeting on Tuesday with real estate developers, including Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority, Dubai Investment Group, TECOM, Dubai Properties Group and Meydan group, to remove abandoned vehicles from roadsides and public places where they damage the cultural and aesthetic appearance of the city.

“It was decided that Dubai Municipality will offer the service of removing abandoned vehicles, which are approved by these companies, according to their eligibility for removal. The legal responsibility for the removal will be on the developer company and not on Dubai Municipality," said Abdul Majeed Abdul Aziz Al Saifaie, director of the department.

He also stressed the importance of spreading environmental awareness to the private sector.

“A number of important topics were discussed in the meeting, the most significant among them being the ways to enhance the role of these companies in creating awareness among tenants of residential complexes,” said Al Saifaie.

Violations leading up to the impounding of cars will attract Dh1,381, including municipal fines, storage charges and towing fee, according to previous Gulf News reports.

“First, the vehicle will be identified whether it meets the conditions of removal (left dirty, damaged or obstructs city cleaning) and then a violation notice will be issued by putting a warning sticker on the vehicle,” he said. Drivers will then have 15 days to clean the vehicle.

“In the event of failure to respond within this period, the vehicle will be confiscated and shifted to the Municipality Scrap Yard of the Warehouse Section under the Contracts and Purchase Department. If the vehicle owner does not contact the Municipality to pay the fine, the vehicle will be sold by auction,” added Al Saifaie.
