Geneva: Ambassador Obaid Salem Al Za’abi, UAE Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, has called for concerted international action to bring the Syrian parties to the table to spare the blood of Syrians and restore stability.

Al Za’abi was speaking before the 24th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, being held from September 9 to 27.

The interactive session discussed a report compiled by the independent international investigation committee on Syria and a report from the special rapporteur on the internally displaced Syrians.

Al Za’abi welcomed the members of the international investigation team and the special rapporteur on displaced people, appreciating their efforts on compiling the two reports about the dire conditions in Syria. He noted that the issuance of the two reports coincided with another UN report on the use of chemical weapons on civilians in Al Ghouta, near Damascus. The incident claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians and injured many others.

Al Za’abi underlined that the UAE condemned in the strongest terms the attack on innocent people, calling on the international community to bring perpetrators to book.

He noted that 10 reports have been filed on deteriorating human rights in Syria and endorsed by the Human Rights Council, but civilians are still being displaced or killed in Syria.

Al Za’abi urged the international community to put an end to the bloodshed in Syria, citing the report compiled by the committee, calling for an end to the conflict before any political solution in Syria.

He noted that the upsurge of violence caused the huge displacement of over six million Syrians internally, while others fled to neighbouring countries.

Ambassador Al Za’abi commended the efforts being exerted by the UAE Red Crescent Authority to assist Syrian refugees in Jordan. He said the UAE supports the call of the special rapporteur on protecting and assisting displaced Syrians.
