Abu Dhabi: Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi, Speaker of the Federal National Council affirmed that the House backs US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the nuclear agreement with Iran and welcomes his strategy in this regard.
“We stress the need for the international community to cooperate with the US administration to free the Middle East from nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, to preserve international security and stability,” Al Qubaisi said in her speech at the opening of the House’s session today (Wednesday).
Trump announced on Tuesday he was quitting the Iran nuclear deal, leaving the future of Tehran's nuclear ambitions in question.
"It is clear to me that we cannot prevent an Iranian nuclear bomb under the decaying and rotten structure of the current agreement," Trump said from the White House.
"The Iran deal is defective at its core. If we do nothing we know exactly what will happen." The US President said.
In announcing his long-telegraphed decision, Trump said he would initiate new sanctions on the regime, crippling the touchstone agreement negotiated by his predecessor.
Trump said any country that helps Iran obtain nuclear weapons would also be "strongly sanctioned."
"This was a horrible one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made," the President said in remarks that, at times, misrepresented the international agreement's provisions. "It didn't bring calm, it didn't bring peace, and it never will," Trump said.
Meanwhile, Al Qubaisi said the FNC condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks that targeted the headquarters of the Electoral Commission in the Libyan capital, Tripoli on Wednesday, May 2, as well as the bombing of the voter registration center in eastern Afghanistan last Sunday.
“My sincere condolences to the Libyan and Afghan peoples and the families of the victims and we wish the injured speedy recovery,” Al Qubaisi said.
Al Qubaisi pointed out that the link between these two terrorist attacks is the continuation of terrorist organisations, their supporters and their conspiracies, attempting to obstruct peoples' efforts to reduce the suffering, and to resist their desire to resume their normal course of life.
Al Qubaisi reiterated the UAE's firm stand against and rejection of the various forms of violence and terrorism regardless of their source, premises and objectives.
Al Qubaisi said the continued threat of terrorism testifies to the importance of the efforts exerted by the UAE in official and parliamentary diplomacy to mobilize the international community, governments and parliaments to deal more effectively with extremism and terrorism.
