Dubai: The Dubai Government Wednesday honoured government departments, private companies and individuals for their outstanding contributions and excellent services to the community through the Dubai Quality Awards, Dubai Service Excellence Awards and Dubai Human Development Awards.

At a ceremony attended by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Department of Economic Development honoured UAE-based businesses for good practice, service and integration.

Held under the patronage of Shaikh Mohammad, the awards are aimed at improving services in government departments as well as private companies.

The awards have, in the past decade, helped government departments become more pro-active and enhance services by streamlining processes that reduce file processing time, thus helping residents and companies to manage their affairs more productively.

"Dubai has always maintained a strong and flexible economy based on our wise leadership and boundless ambition. The competitive environment in the emirate paved the way for creating a culture of excellence as a reference for determining the features of competition and performance of companies," Sami Daen Al Qamzi, DED director-general, said at the ceremony.

Quest for excellence

"Since its launch in 1994, the Dubai Quality Award has represented the most successful examples of public-private sector partnerships. The awards are a great motivating force, and an inspiration for decision makers of today and the business leaders of tomorrow, who I believe, will be born into a generation hungry for excellence."

Shaikh Mohammad honoured the winners of the Dubai Quality Awards — a scheme he launched in 1994 to improve business practices, which has helped Dubai come a long way from being a desert outpost populated by small companies to an international business hub.

The Dubai Quality Award (DQA) is presented to companies that have demonstrated a commitment to best practices in their fields. It is open to all companies operating in the UAE.

Since its inception, 169 companies have achieved recognition through the awards in various sectors of industry including finance, construction, manufacturing, trade, services, higher education, health, real estate and tourism.

The DQA is presented to companies in various sectors of the economy.

Among the winners this year is Tecom Investments.

The event also presented Dubai Quality Appreciation Programmes, which honour winners for their efforts to sustain excellence in their firm practices.

"We are very proud to have been given this recognition, which further affirms our commitment towards excellence and to the region," said Rizwan Sajan, chairman of Danube Building Materials, a winner of the Dubai Quality Appreciation Programme.

Expansion drive

"This award is also a remarkable motivation for us to continue our efforts to secure further growth in terms of our manufacturing capabilities and expand our retail presence in the region."

Shaikh Mohammad was joined by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai; Saeed Al Tayer, managing director and chief executive officer of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa); Sultan Bin Butti Bin Mejren, director-general of the Dubai Land Department; and Mohammad Bushanain, executive director of the DED's Business Excellence Centre, to bestow the awards.
