Sharjah: Sharjah’s Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has announced that it has started the payment of Dh10 million to 5,000 Emirati owners of old taxi number plates.
The compensation is paid annually to the owners of old number plates that are now being operated by franchise companies that fall under the umbrella of SRTA, apart from a compensation of Dh32 million that is also paid annually by the authority.
Abdul Aziz Mohammad Al Jarwan, director of SRTA for Transportation Affairs, said the move is on the directives of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to follow up on the living conditions of Emiratis, especially the owners of old taxi number plates.
Al Jarwan said the total value of compensation paid to Emirati owners of old taxi number plates is Dh42 million. Al Jarwan said that Dh2,000 is paid annually for every number owned, which adds up to Dh10 million in total, apart from the annual compensation of Dh32 million, which is an average of Dh2.7 million per month with Dh500 paid for every taxi that operated in the city, and Dh1,000 for those that operated outside the city.
Al Jarwan said the compensation is paid to beneficiaries if they meet the set conditions and present the necessary documents proving their ownership of old number plates. He called on the owners who did not meet the requirements due to a lack of documents to quickly complete the necessary procedures so they could receive their compensation.
