Abu Dhabi: The Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (Esma) on Tuesday announced its energy efficiency regulation for household appliances, which will be applied to all water pumps in the UAE.

Speaking at a press conference on the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, Abdullah Al Maeeni, director-general of Esma, said: “We will set minimum standards for pump efficiency to ensure energy savings of up to 20 per cent from the current situation.”

The UAE is one of the top ten importing countries for water pumps. Al Maeeni said Esma will cooperate with inspection bodies at the federal level to ensure registration of the products in the UAE conformity system.

He added that the UAE achieved 13 per cent higher savings in energy consumption in residential buildings and government facilities in 2017, compared to 2016.

Al Maeeni said Esma is currently implementing new plans to expand the energy-efficiency programme, including updating the energy-efficiency regulations for TV sets, rotary water pumps, washing machines, dryers, ovens and vacuum cleaners.

He added that the total number of products recorded in energy-efficiency programmes during 2017 reached 2.7 million, an increase of about 1.2 million new products.

The energy-efficiency programmes implemented five years ago contributed to the provision of 8.6 million energy efficient products, which included four million household air-conditioners, 1.8 million washing machines and dryers, and one million electric storage water heaters.
