Dubai: A policeman convinced a European mother to step back from the edge of a balcony of a 20-storey tower in Jumeirah Village area when she was about to jump to death, an officer told Gulf News.
Brigadier Abdul Raheem Bin Shafe’ei, director of Al Barsha police station, said they were alerted by the Command Room about a woman trying to jump off the balcony.
“An official went to the building quickly and talked to the woman. She was depressed due to family disputes and the officer convinced her not to end to her life and she stepped down,” Brigadier Bin Shafee told Gulf News.
The woman in her 20s was taken to Al Barsha police station along with her husband.
“We sat with her to learn about her problems. We told her that suicide is not the solution to her problems and that life is beautiful and it is a gift that we shouldn’t waste,” he added.
The woman will attend a social and medical rehabilitation programme until she can return to normal life as part of a new initiative called ‘Hope Window’ started on the directives of Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri, commander-in-chief of Dubai Police.
“The new initiative by Al Barsha police station will help provide mental and social support to people who have suicidal tendencies. The initiative will be implemented in other police stations as well in the future,” Brig Bin Shafe’ei said.
The officer praised the role of the policeman who negotiated with the woman and prevented her from ending her life.
“The quick response to the emergency call and the persuasive approach of the policeman foiled the suicide attempt. She trusted the officer who convinced her that jumping off the balcony is not a solution to her troubles,” Brig Bin Shafe’ei added.
