Dubai: Nearly 20 inmates at a police detention centre quit smoking after officers convinced them to do so as part of their new campaign, ‘Smoking is a disease. Leave it and be healthy’, Dubai Police said on Thursday.

Brigadier Saeed Hamad Bin Sulaiman, director of Al Rashidiya police station, said under the new initiative, officers could educate and help 20 inmates give up the unhealthy habit.

“This campaign targeted inmates in Al Rashidiya detention centre as part of the station’s community initiative to help society to reach the best health standards in the emirate,” Brigadier Bin Sulaiman said.

Officers spent time with the inmates to talk about the dangers of smoking and explain that it is one of the main reasons for cancer.

“We have an inmate who used to smoke three packets of cigarettes per day but after the initiative, he quit,” Brigadier Bin Sulaiman added.
