Abu Dhabi: Police have arrested a woman who allegedly blackmailed people and extorted money from them, the police said on Wednesday. The Arab woman in her thirties, identified as N.M., targeted people through her fake social media and email accounts. She posted obscene pictures and videos of women online and blackmailed them.

Brigadier-General Tarek Khalfan Al Ghol, director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation, said the suspect extorted money from a number of people after blackmailing them through fake accounts on Snapchat. She disguised her personality, name and used other women’s pictures to promote vice.

She also threatened the women that she would publish their obscene pictures on social media if they did not pay her Dh500 each.

Colonel Zuma Al Kaabi, director of Criminal Investigation Department, said the police received calls from several people who fell into her trap and a team was formed to arrest the suspect.

The police seized her smart phones which were used to create the fake accounts on social media.

Col Al Kaabi urged residents to be cautious about fake accounts created by such unscrupulous elements on social media sites and don’t fall into their traps. Police urged people to report such attempts to them immediately.
