Dubai: The mystery surrounding the death of a man whose decomposed body was found in a deserted area in Jebel Ali has been solved by Dubai Police, an official said.

Brigadier Adil Mohammad Al Suwaidi, director of Jebel Ali police station, said they were alerted recently about a decomposed body buried in a deserted area near a labour accommodation along Shaikh Zayed Road.

A police patrol team, and forensic and crime scene experts went to the location and identified the body as that of an Asian worker.

“The body was decomposed and buried in the desert. It was of an Asian worker. At first, we suspected that a group of co-workers were involved but later found out that one person had strangled the victim using a rope with the assistance of his relatives,” Brig Al Suwaidi said.

Police arrested the main suspect and his relatives. The main suspect confessed that he killed him after a heated argument. He said he was angry with the victim because the latter had sent inappropriate pictures to his wife via social media networks and he decided to kill him.

“He confessed that he set a trap with a group of his relatives. They lured the victim to a deserted area, tied him up and gagged him,” Brig Al Suwaidi said.

The main suspect sexually abused the victim and then strangled him to death with a rope before burying his body on the spot.

The suspects have been referred to the Dubai Public Prosecution to complete the investigation.

Brig Al Suwaidi said the misuse of social media has led to an increasing number of crimes of late.

“With the social media becoming popular in society, we have started seeing more crimes committed because of its misuse like hacking, blackmailing or defaming people by publishing private pictures online. People should use social media in the correct way and not misuse it,” he added.
