Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Police said more than 600 people have been arrested for illegally transporting passengers in Abu Dhabi.

The Abu Dhabi Police has registered 659 cases of illegal transportation of passengers in past three months.

The errant motorists used their private vehicles to transport passengers in exchange for payment. They were arrested during a police campaign.

“Such activities are uncivilised and leave an adverse effect on the traffic, security, economic and the society. Even such cabbies don’t provide passenger’s safety equipment,” said Brigadier General Ibrahim Sultan Al Zaabi, direct of the transportation safety department of Abu Dhabi Police.

Al Zaabi said that the drivers do not have a trade licence or comprehensive insurance for their vehicles.

He urged residents to use the services of authorised transportation in the emirate, pointing out that these vehicles are equipped with international safety features and cameras.
