Dubai: A worker, who got drunk and stabbed his co-worker with a vegetable knife following a heated argument, was sentenced to four months in jail.
In October, the 29-year-old Indian worker and his countryman co-worker returned to their room at a labour accommodation in Al Muhaisnah after a night out, drinking.
They indulged in a heated argument that developed into a fight during which the 29-year-old grabbed a vegetable knife and stabbed his countryman twice in his abdomen.
Screaming in pain, the victim fell on the floor bleeding profusely while the defendant fled the scene with the knife.
A fellow worker heard the victim’s cries for help and rushed to the room to find part of the victim’s intestines falling out of his abdomen.
He called out to other workers who reported the incident to police and called an ambulance.
Swift medical intervention helped save the victim’s life.
The defendant was arrested after he was found hiding in a parking lot between two cars following a massive police manhunt in Al Ghusais.
On Thursday, the Dubai Court of First Instance jailed the defendant for three months for the knife attack and another month for drinking.
As per the primary ruling, presiding judge Urfan Omar said the accused would be deported.
When he showed up in court, the accused contended: “I didn’t intend to stab him. We had a heated argument as we had been drinking together ... I don’t remember what happened exactly as I was under the influence of liquor.”
The worker, who first rushed to the victim’s rescue, testified that he was listening to music when he overheard the heated argument.
A policeman said they searched the vicinity and found the accused hiding in a parking lot after an hour.
“During questioning, he said he had a heated argument with his co-worker and then stabbed him. He claimed that he threw away the knife in a sandy area near the accommodation, but we couldn’t recover the knife,” said the policeman.
The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
