Dubai: A jobless man, who claimed to be a diplomat, has been accused of assaulting, cursing and threatening two policemen when they stopped him for driving recklessly.
The two policemen were said to be in a police car when they spotted a speeding vehicle with the motorist driving recklessly and inattentively in Al Barsha area in May.
According to records, the policemen followed the speeding car and once it stopped, they approached the driver and asked him for his papers and the car’s registration.
When the driver, a 30-yerar-old Kuwaiti man, claimed to be a diplomat, the policemen asked for his personal identification papers to prove his claims.
Almost instantaneously, the Kuwaiti man assaulted the two policemen, cursed them and threatened to have them sacked from the police force as he claimed to know ‘influential people’.
Police then apprehended the 30-year-old man and referred him to Public Prosecution.
Prosecutors accused the Kuwaiti suspect of assaulting police officers while resisting arrest, cursing the policemen and threatening them as well and driving a car without a number plate.
The suspect strongly refuted the allegations and pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Monday.
“No … I didn’t [assault the policemen],” he contended before presiding judge Habib Awad.
His lawyer asked judge Awad to adjourn the case until he prepared his defence.
“He told me he is a diplomat when I asked him for his papers. When I asked him to give me papers that proved he is a diplomat, he responded ‘let your government prove it’. He also tried to punch me, but I dodged his attack. When my partner and I restrained him, he cursed us and threatened to get us fired,” one of the assaulted policemen testified to prosecutors.
Another policeman corroborated his partner’s statement and claimed to prosecutors: “We got injured when the suspect resisted arrest. He seemed to be under the influence of alcohol.”
