Dubai: A cleaner has been jailed for three months for stealing two gold rings on two separate occasions when she was hired to clean two apartments. She was convicted on two counts of thefts.

The 33-year-old Filipina cleaner was hired to clean two flats of two European women when she stole the rings in March.

On Monday, the Dubai Court of First Instance jailed the 33-year-old Filipina cleaner for three months for stealing a ring worth Dh8,000 from the apartment of a British women.

Citing grounds of leniency, presiding judge Urfan Omar handed the defendant a three-month suspended imprisonment for stealing a gold ring from the apartment of a French woman.

When the Filipina cleaner appeared before the court, she pleaded guilty in both cases.

“Yes I stole the ring,” the 33-year-old told presiding judge Omar.

According to Monday’s ruling, the defendant will be deported following the completion of her punishment

In the first case, the French woman testified that she had hired the Filipina on hourly basis from a cleaning agency when she stole the ring. She said that she was informed by the police about the theft of her ring. The French woman said that she was asked by the police to come to the police station to record her statement.

The British woman testified that police called her to ask whether she had lost any ring. “When I told them that I do not remember about it, they sent me on WhatsApp an image of a ring that my aunt had given me as a gift nine years ago.”

The Filipina cleaner told prosecutors that police arrested her at a shop in the Gold Souq when she tried to sell the stolen rings.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
