Dubai: A security guard has been jailed for six months for beating two policemen who tried to arrest him for bootlegging behind a mosque in Dubai.
A police patrol saw three African men who were believed to be selling alcohol in a parking lot behind a mosque in Freej Al Marar.
Police monitored the Africans for two days and when they made sure that they had been selling liquor, they raided the spot to apprehend them.
When the trio, who turned out to be Nigerians, saw two policemen raiding the place, two of them fled, but the 30-year-old security guard failed to do so.
When the policemen tried to handcuff him, the 30-year-old beat the two policemen and resisted arrest.
On Tuesday, the Dubai Court of First Instance jailed the Nigerian defendant for beating two policemen.
According to the primary ruling, presiding judge Mohammad Jamal referred the accused to the Dubai Misdemeanours Court where he will be tried for possessing 37 cans of beer.
The defendant, who pleaded not guilty, will be deported after serving his punishment.
“I did not that,” he argued in court.
One of the beaten policemen testified that they watched the trio for two consecutive days and when they made sure they were bootlegging, the raided the area.
“Two of them absconded quickly and the third resisted arrest. He beat us and tried to run away but we foiled his attempt and handcuffed him,” said the policeman.
Tuesday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
