Gaza: A Palestinian teenager died on Thursday after being hit by Israeli tank fire on the Gaza border, the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry said.

Abdul Fattah Abu Azoum, 17, was hit in the head earlier on Thursday near Rafah in southern Gaza, the ministry said.

The Israeli army said he and a companion were seeking to breach the border.

Palestinian witnesses confirmed the two were seeking to breach the border.

Palestinian medics said the other escaped with minor injuries.

Since protests broke out along the Gaza border on March 30, at least 135 Palestinians, peacefully protesting, have been killed by Israeli snipers.

No Israelis have been killed.

Palestinians are demanding the right to return to their land which they were force to flee in 1948 when the state of Israel was created.

They are also protesting against a crippling Israeli-blockade of Gaza, in place since 2007.

Experts warn the economic situation in Gaza is on the brink of collapse as 40 per cent of its residents are unemployed and 70 per cent rely on humanitarian aid.
