Sharjah: Two workers died in their room at a labour accommodation in Sharjah on Thursday due to carbon monoxide poisoning from the power generator that was inside their room, police said.

The Indian expatriates lived at the labour accommodation at the Industrial 11, near the National Paints Roundabout. A police source said they worked for a company manufacturing kitchen equipment.

Police did not reveal the names of the victims.

The power generator was kept running inside the room following power cuts. Doctors confirmed that the workers died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Colleagues said one of the deceased was Shivayya, 38, from Andhra Pradesh. They could not identify the other man.

Sudden illness

Other workers who slept in the open space outside the accommodation said Shivayya and the other worker never suffered from any serious illness, but showed signs of breathlessness and general weakness on Tuesday at around 9am. They also began vomiting.

The workers took the men to a small clinic, but both were already dead.
