Manama: A Yemeni expatriate in Saudi Arabia has secured four years of free residency visas after he won a bet with his employer.
The Yemeni national, Jalal Ahmad but calling himself “The Sensible from Taez” on Facebook, posted a picture of a Saudi man whom he identified as his employer.
He added that he had a bet with him and wanted people to help him win.
According to the employee-employer terms, the Yemeni national would have his residency permit renewed annually free of charge for four years — if he gets 1,500 likes within 24 hours.
“I am truly serious about this bet and I want you to help me secure the likes,” he pleaded.
“The amount for four years of residency visas is SR24,000 (about $6,400).”
Within 12 hours, he received more than 11,000 likes and 7,500 comments. Eventually, he got more than 33,000 likes.
“I want to thank you for your tremendous support,” Jalal posted on Facebook following the overwhelming responsive.
Pledge to be honoured
“My brother and sponsor said he would honour his pledge. I thank all of you who supported me even though they do not know me.”
Several users said they were initially surprised by the bet, but then welcomed it and went along the idea of sharing on the fun by liking the post.
However, some users insisted that the Saudi national should not have entered into a “senseless bet that does not reflect the professional relationship between them.”
Some users said that betting was not allowed in Islam and that the whole idea was a violation of religious tenets that should not have been committed.
