Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: Funeral prayers for Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammad Bin Saud took place on Monday after the 78-year-old senior prince and former defence minister passed away.

Prince Mohammad was not in line for the throne, but wielded influence as part of a council of royal family members that helps select the heirs to rule Saudi Arabia.

The official Saudi Press Agency says Prince Mohammad died on Sunday, but gave no other details.

Prince Mohammad served as defence minister in the early 1960s and managed to retain political significance after his father King Saud Bin Abdul Aziz was forced from the throne in 1964.

Prince Mohammad also served as governor of Al Baha province in southwestern Saudi Arabia from 1986 to 2010.
