Muscat: Oman Police have arrested two men on charges of theft, kidnap and the attempted rape of a woman, according to a Royal Oman Police (ROP) press release on Thursday. One of the arrested is a taxi driver who stopped to offer the woman a lift.

“The two accused, who were in a taxi, saw the victim walking along the shoulder of the road leading to old Seeb town and offered to drop her,” a ROP spokesman said.

He revealed that one of the accused is Omani while the other is an Asian expatriate.

He added the woman wanted to go to a nearby shopping mall so she got in the taxi. However, instead of going to the mall, the Omani taxi driver drove off towards Birka town, about 100km north of Muscat.

“They took the victim to an isolated area and tried to rape her before taking her mobile phone and cash,” the spokesman said. He did not elaborate how the victim escaped from the clutches of the accused.

The victim filed a complaint with the police, who tracked down the accused from the description of the taxi and the accused given by the woman.

“The defendants confessed to the crime under interrogation after police arrested them,” he said, adding that both the accused have been handed over to the Public Prosecution for further action.
