Father of Omani police officer killed in Muscat mall receiving medal of honour.

Muscat:

Omani policeman Saud Bin Saeed Al Rawahi, who was stabbed to death at mall in Muscat on December 30, has posthumously been conferred with a medal of honour.

A statement issued by the Royal Oman Police (ROP) said Lieutenant General Hassan Al Shoraiqi, Inspector-General of Police and Customs, awarded Al Rawahi, who died in the line of duty, with a Medal of Bravery. The officer’s father received the medal.

Al Rawahi was knifed to death by an attacker at the City Centre mall in Muscat. Two others were wounded in the attack.

The attacker, an Omani national, carried a document indicating he was mentally ill. He had attempted to murder an Indian citizen at the mall. The Indian was left with serious injuries, the ROP said. Pictures and videos of the incident went viral on social media platforms, following which police warned people not to circulate images or videos related to the crime.

Users started the hashtag ‘Martyr of the nation, Saud Al Rawahi’ to express grief and sorrow and to pay condolences to his bereaved family.

Other called on the Omani authorities to investigate the authenticity of the document carried by the accused suggesting he was mentally ill.

Murders are very rare in Oman; only 10 were reported in 2017.
