Muscat: Authorities in Oman have been inundated with insurance claims for losses following the aftermath of Cyclone Mekunu which hit the country in the late part of May.
The amount of the insurance claims filed up to June 20 amount to 75 million riyals, according to the Capital Market Authority (CMA).
The majority of claims were made for property, vehicle and marine equipment losses, Ahmad Al Mamari, the insurance sector head at the CMA, told Gulf News.
The 361 property claims filed were valued at 48,683,575 riyals while the 169 vehicle claims were valued at 590,646 riyals.
At least seven people were killed in the cyclone, mostly in flash floods.
The cyclone inflicted heavy damage in the country, particularly in Salalah, where strong winds knocked over street lights and tore away roofing.
A comprehensive government-coordinated clean-up effort was able to repair damaged roads and restore power to the area within eight days.
