Muscat: A three-man inquiry commission has been set up by the Attorney General of Oman, Hussain Bin Ali Al Hilali, to thoroughly investigate the circumstances in which Saham resident Abdullah Bin Ali Bin Mohammad Al Ghamlasi was killed when protest in Sohar turned violent last Sunday.

The inquiry committee is headed by Khamis Bin Salim Al Khalili, the Assistant Attorney General, with Nasser Khamis Al Soai and Khalid Bin Saeed Al Mashri comprising the other members of the commission.

The commission has already heard the victim’s family members, who have filed a complaint against the Royal Oman Police for the shooting that killed Al Ghamlasi.

The Attorney General has conveyed his sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of victims. Attorney General Al Hilali has promised that the prosecutor will take all the necessary measures and find out the facts about the circumstances of the incident that led to the young Saham resident’s death.

An autopsy of the victim has been ordered where forensic investigations would be carried out to determine the cause of death, date, time and injuries to the victim.

"We would investigate every possible data and facts to bring the truth out," said a statement of Attorney General carried by ONA.

Dr. Ahmed Sabri will carry out the autopsy on the victim to place all the evidence and clues on the table that would unravel the circumstances of the incident bring to light the truth.

The Attorney General’s office has given assurance to the general public that the inquiry commission will be fully transparent while investigating the case.

They have even promised to make public the full investigation with updates in the local media.

"It will be an open investigation and nothing will be hidden from the public eye," the statement said.

Al Ghamlasi died ast Sunday when police had to open fire on a hostile group of protesters, who besieged the Sohar police station, demanding the release of 200 protesters, who were picked up in night on Saturday and sent to Sumayil prison.

The victim, in his early twenties, is small trader in Saham town 30kms south of Sohar and had gone to the industrial port town to join the protesters, demanding among other thing better job opportunities and living standards.

The protesters across the nation have been demanding thorough inquiry and punishment to those guilty of causing the death of Al Ghamlasi.
