Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) have arrested four suspects from the southern region of Dhofar on charges of attempting to smuggle firearms into the country, according to a press release issued on Sunday.

The Criminal Investigation Department in the Dhofar region were tipped off that some people were smuggling arms from the southern border in Dhofar.

“The four were arrested red-handed with arms in their vehicle,” a spokesman for the ROP’s Public Relations Department said, adding that the police also seized a large amount of cash believed to be earnings from arms sale in Dhofar.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department in Northern Batinah region arrested 12 people of Asian nationality for forging visas. “Five of them were charged for forging visas while the seven others were arrested for living in the country without a valid visa,” he said.

He added that Saham police station had received information that the accused were selling fraudulent visas from a farmhouse in Salam area.

“With the due permission and coordination from the attorney-general’s office, the farmhouse was raided and the accused were arrested.

“The police have confiscated computers and other paraphernalia used to make fake visas,” he added.

All the accused were handed over to the Public Prosecution.
