Manama: Kuwait has officially renamed the Fifth Ring Road as the Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Road. Abdul Aziz Al Ebrahim, the Kuwaiti minister of electricity and water and the minister of works, said all the signs have been fixed to indicate the new name of the vital ring road in the capital Kuwait City.

The renaming, upon instructions from the Emir Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad, was a gesture of gratitude and in appreciation of the commendable efforts, remarkable achievements and outstanding role of Shaikh Zayed in the service of the Gulf, Arab and Islamic nations, Kuwaiti media reported on Thursday.

Kuwait’s cabinet in February said that it was renaming the ring road in honour of the late UAE leader. Shaikh Zayed, appreciated as the principal driving force behind the formation and prosperous development of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was the first president of the country. He passed away in 2004. Several towns, avenues and buildings in the Arab and Islamic worlds are named after him in obvious signs of recognition and gratitude.
