Kuwait: Government officials in Kuwait have pulled a prominent cleric off television over previous comments they say are stoking sectarian tensions and supporting an Al Qaida-linked rebel group in Syria.

Information Minister Shaikh Salman Al Homoud told journalists on Tuesday that an investigation was under way into the comments made by Shafi Al Ajmi.

A television show by the cleric premiered on Monday in Kuwait. Al Homoud said that the Kuwaiti government “does not approve of airing episodes for any individual who instigates hatred and promotes such rhetoric”.

Al Ajmi regularly writes anti-Shiite articles and has supported the Al Qaida linked group Al Nusra Front, which is fighting in Syria against the government of President Bashar Al Assad.

The cleric declined to speak to The Associated Press when contacted on Tuesday.
