Patna: A man was blinded after acid was injected into his eyes because he had eloped with his employer’s wife.

The incident took place in Begusarai district, some 140km east of Patna, on Friday evening. Police have arrested one person while raids are on to nab the other absconding accused.

Gautam Kumar Chaudhary, who was employed as tractor driver, fell in love with his employer Dayaram Singh’s wife.

He eloped with the woman, a mother of two children, last week. Singh registered a case with the local police, who brought back his wife after 10 days.

On the fateful evening, the woman’s family members called up the driver saying she wanted to live with him and he should come to take her to his house.

The unsuspecting the driver drove to take his “love” with him but was abducted midway by a group of 20-25 villagers who took him to a secluded place where he was thrashed for eloping with the woman.

Even as he begged for mercy, one of the attackers injected acid into both his eye, leaving him writhing in pain.

The attackers threw him into a road-side ditch and fled.

According to the victim, hearing his cries, some local villagers informed his family who admitted him to a local hospital. Doctors said he has lost vision in both his eyes.

“The incident is the outcome of the love affair – the woman had eloped with the victim. Police found her later and handed to her husband. We have arrested one person so far,” local deputy superintendent of police BK Singh told the media.

A similar incident took place in September last year when a woman was lynched while her boyfriend was blinded for allegedly falling in love.

The spine-chilling incident took place in Mathura village under Narpatganj block in Araria district, more than 300km east of Patna.

In that case too, both the man and the woman were married to others and both had children but their love affair continued, which earned the ire of villagers.
