Chennai: Amid a sea of his party supporters, DMK supremo and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu yesterday celebrated his 84th birthday with his partymen organising laser shows and unique 3D animation for their leader.

Karunanidhi said: "You are like brothers. Come together and join us. I consider this my birthday gift," to his supporters raising the pitch of the celebration which closely follows his completion of 50 years as legislator.

Greetings

Governor Surjeet Singh Barnala was one of the first dignitaries to greet Karunanidhi, who was followed by the leaders of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) coalition.

UPA Chairwoman Sonia Gandhi also greeted the DMK supremo by phone.

However, there were no confirmation whether Dayanidhi Maran, grand nephew of Karunanidhi, paid a visit to latter's residence to greet him.

After the family feud came out in open, Karunanidhi sidelined Maran and also made him resign from the Union Telecom Ministry.

Speculations were rife over Maran's participation at the gala function in the evening to celebrate Karunanidhi's birthday.

The city was draped with posters and flags of the party as people and ardent supporters of the party made a beeline to the DMK headquarters 'Anna Arivalayam'.

The celebrations would continue entire month with various programmes being run, like a special drive to plant 84,000 saplings during this period.
