Hyderabad: A journalist working for a Telugu daily poisoned his three-member family before hanging himself at his home in Siddipet, 100km away from Hyderabad.

Police said while his two minor children died, his wife was fighting for life in a local hospital.

The incident came to light on Thursday morning when nobody opened the door despite several attempts and the neighbours broke open the door only to find the dead bodies and woman of the house unconscious.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Rameshwar said that Hanumantha Rao apparently poisoned his wife and children before hanging himself.

Two children include 5-year-old daughter Minnu and three-year-old son Binnu. Their mother Meena was rushed to local hospital in a serious condition.

The incident in Srinagar colony has sent waves of shock and dismay across the town.

“Financial crisis appears to be the reason for the extreme step,” he said. Hanumantha Rao was working as a contributor for Hyderabad-based Telugu newspaper Andhra Bhoomi. Rao had a debt of Rs1 million and was finding it difficult to repay the same, police said.

Siddipet police has registered a case of suspicious deaths and was investigating.
