Patna: Jailed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad was on Wednesday granted five days’ parole to attend the wedding of his eldest son Tej Pratap Yadav who will tie the knot with Aishwarya Rai, granddaughter of a former chief minister Daroga Prasad Rai.

The wedding will take place in Patna on May 12.

Massive preparations are being made and invitation cards have already been distributed among guests.

The grant of parole brought cheer among family members and the politician’s supporters.

Prasad had earlier missed the engagement ceremony of his son held in Patna last month.

The parole was granted after he submitted a petition to the jail authorities seeking his temporary release from jail on Tuesday and the hospital authorities declared that he was fit to travel.

“We submitted an application seeking Prasad’s temporary release from jail on parole for five days from May 10 to May 14 as Prasad wanted to attend his son’s wedding to fulfill his parents duty,” Prasad’s close associate and RJD lawmaker Bhola Yadav journalists.

Keeping in view the function in the family, he was eventually granted the parole.

He is expected to reach Patna by evening flight on Wednesday under heavy police security. Prasad is currently serving jail term in Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi, capital of Jharkhand state, since December 23 last year after being convicted in three fodder scam cases.

Earlier Prasad had applied for provisional bail on health ground but on the day the court was to hear his petition, the advocates proceeded on strike. Now his petition is likely to come up for hearing on May 11- a day before his son’s wedding.

Prasad who is lodged in jail for the past about five months was currently undergoing treatment at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi for various health complications. He has been diagnosed with at least 15 different kinds of disease which include Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, peri-anal abscess, cardiac problems and acute kidney injury.

During his judicial custody, Prasad was also shifted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, as his condition turned critical. Only last week, he was discharged from AIIMS but was shifted back to RIMS.
