Dubai: In India, nearly 300,000 people came together to create a human chain to honour the soldiers of the country.

The chain, which was 650 kilometres long, was formed in four border districts of the Indian state of Rajasthan, a day before India’s 72nd Independence Day.

Hashtag #RajasthanHumanChain was among the top trends on Twitter in India, as users in the country shared pictures of the event.

Tweep @sahurahuljan posted: “Liked the way of celebrating Independence Day. #RajasthanHumanChain”

And, Twitter user @PinkCityLover wrote: “We are proud that our army is one of the most powerful forces in the world. #RajasthanHumanChain”

Many took to the micro-blogging site to appreciate the efforts of the soldiers and to pay tribute to fallen soldiers.

@sahurahuljan also tweeted: “Our brave soldiers really deserve such... a tribute. #RajasthanHumanChain”

And, @KishanDewasi_94 added: “Entire Rajasthan ... gives salute to martyrdom. In honour of the Army Seals, today in Ganganagar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Barmer districts in Rajasthan... long human chain created.”

Many said this was a heartwarming effort by those participating in the chain.

Tweep @Dragonmbkhan posted: “#RajasthanHumanChain, this is so touching...”

Twitter also saw patriotic messages from Indian social media users. @Ratnaprabha_IAS posted: “On the eve of Independence Day let us all unite to create a New India where humanity is the only priority and all relations are based on mutual likes, not on caste or religion and regions! True spirit of unity in diversity.”

India’s neighbour, Pakistan, celebrated Independence Day a day earlier — on August 14.

Hoping for cordial relations between both countries, @ShahzebRathore wrote: “Happy Independence Day Pakistan and India! May peace prevail and we fight against common enemies, such as poverty, climate change, illiteracy, unemployment and the ever so real water crisis.”
