New Delhi: Days after saying that even Hindu deity Rama would not have been able to put an end to rising rape incidents in India, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Surendra Singh on Thursday said Hindu couples must have at least five children to keep ‘Hindutva’ intact.

“Hindus should have at least five children. Two for the man, two for the woman and one surplus. All Hindu spiritual leaders want this to happen,” he told media at a public event in his constituency Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.

Singh said giving birth to a child was ‘prasad’ (gift) from God.

“Having a child is having ‘prasad’ from God. Why should you deny that? Hindus will become a minority if there is no balance in population control,” he added.

The lawmaker, known for making controversial statements, said the Hindu community should be concerned that they may become a minority if they do not increase their population.

“India can become strong, when Hindus are strong. When Hindu is weak, India is weak. Hindus will be a minority, not due to terrorists but due to themselves,” he said.

Earlier, Singh had blamed use of cell phones by women for rising incidences of rape in the country.

He even said that rape cannot be curbed even if Lord Rama descends on earth.

In January, Singh said India would become a Hindu nation by 2024.

Last year, he had said that “prostitutes are better than government officers”, since the bureaucrats take money yet they don’t do the job.

He even called West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ‘Surpanakha.’ Surpanakha was sister of King of Lanka ‘Ravana’ in Hindu epic ‘Ramayana.’

“The Lakshman who will kill demon Surpanakha has been born, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah will cut this Surpanakha’s nose too as happened in Ramayana,” Singh had said.
