Patna: A college girl has been gang-raped in Bihar after befriending a stranger on Facebook. Police have arrested all the six accused.

The incident took place at a city hostel in Patna over the weekend, prompting the police to issue an advisory to girls not to accept friend requests from strangers on Facebook or any other social networking sites.

Police said the girl, 19, a resident of Muzaffarpur district, had come in contact with a man called Ritesh Kumar, a native of Lakhisarai district, through Facebook last year and developed a friendship.

Over the weekend, Ritesh told the girl the he was in Patna and wanted to meet her. After roaming around the city parks and hotels, police said the girl was taken to a city hostel at night. There she was held hostage and gang-raped by Ritesh and his friends. The accused also took photographs and made a video of the incident, threatening to upload it on social media if she dared to reveal it to anyone.

Initially, the victim was terrified and went into depression but soon mustered courage and reported the incident to the police. Acting promptly, the police formed a special team and arrested all the culprits.

“We have arrested all the accused within 12 hours of registering the case. The case will be speedily tried and justice will be delivered to the victim,” Patna’s senior superintendent of police, Manu Maharaj, told the media on Sunday.

The incidents of rape remain a matter of grave concern in Bihar and according to an official report, a total of 289 incidents of rape were reported until March this year.
