Bus travels: How you can use public buses in Abu Dhabi

These bus networks fall under the Public Transport Bus service, which operates under the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC). The ITC has developed a feature that displays real-time bus information through the Darbi platform. It can be accessed on any device here: https://darbi.itc.gov.ae/itc-ar/ or using the Darbi app.

What are Hafilat cards?

As mentioned above, the bus card that you would need to get around the city is called the Hafilat card. To pay your fare, the card is passed over a scan when you hop on or off the bus. These smart cards automatically calculate how much the ride has cost.

There are two types of Hafilat cards available:

1. Anonymous

• Price: Dh10

• Where to buy: Ticket Vending Machines (TVM)

• Card top-up: This can be done at any TVM

• Valid for five years

2. Personalised

• Includes your name and an ID number

• Price: Dh5

• Where to buy: Customer Happiness Centre

• Card top-up: This can be done at any TVM

• Valid for five years

Both cards can be topped up to a maximum amount of Dh150. Aside from visiting a TVM, you can also top up both these cards by going online here: https://hafilat.darb.ae/Identification.aspx. Alternatively, you can use the Darbi app by selecting ‘Public Transport,’ and then ‘Recharge Hafilat.’

How to top up your Hafilat card

To recharge or top-up your Hafilat card, you would need to select any one of the following packages available for commuters. However, some packages are only available for the Personalised card. These include student, senior citizen and People of Determination passes.

Weekly or monthly passes can be purchased by visiting the Card Sales Office in major bus stations or any of the TVMs.

Senior citizens and People of Determination ride for free on intra-city bus routes, with the only incurred cost that of buying the Personalised Hafilat card for Dh5. For inter-city bus routes, they get a 50 percent discount on the ride fare.

• Weekly Pass

Offers an unlimited number of local bus trips for seven days, starting from the day of purchase.

Cost: Dh30

• Monthly Pass

Offers an unlimited number of local bus trips for 30 days, starting from the day of purchase.

Cost: Dh80

The following passes can only be added on to the Personalised card:

• Student Pass

Annual pass that allows unlimited local and regional trips, and a 50 per cent discount on inter-city trips (bus rides between emirates).

• Cost: Dh500

• Where to buy: Customer Happiness Centres

• Required documents: Valid Emirates ID and a letter from the institution where the student is enrolled.

• Senior Citizen Pass

Annual pass that allows unlimited local and regional trips, and a 50 percent discount on inter-city trips.

• For people 55 years old or above

• Cost: Free

• Where to buy: Customer Happiness Centres

• Required documents: Valid Emirates ID

• People of Determination Pass

Annual pass that allows unlimited local and regional trips, and a 50 percent discount on inter-city trips.

• Price: Free

• Where to buy: Customer Happiness Centres

• Required documents: Valid Emirates ID, medical report or ‘Aounak’ card, which is a service card for people of determination

How much does a trip cost?

The trip is charged based on whether you are travelling within Abu Dhabi city, or from various suburbs, like Madinat Zayed or Musaffah, to the main city area. Charges for intercity trips are slightly higher.

• Local trips (within the city): Dh2

• Regional trips (suburbs): Dh2 + Dh0.05 per kilometre.

• Intercity trips (between emirates): Dh10 + Dh0.1 per kilometre.

Abu Dhabi’s public bus system is divided into two main networks: Region and City.

Bus numbers prefixed with an ‘A’ only travel to and from Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Bus numbers prefixed with an ‘X’ are Express buses.

Minibuses are represented with an ‘M’.

Regional Bus to Abu Dhabi City

These bus lines link the main city of Abu Dhabi with its suburbs, and suburbs with each other. These include the residential districts of Al Reef, Al Danah, Al Zahiyah, Saadiyat Island, Al Shalila, Al Rahba and Al Shahama. ICAD and MBZ City are included too, with Mussafah and Shakhbout City. Al Mafraq is a part of Shakhbout City.
