Abu Dhabi: The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) hosted a three-day workshop for its safeguards team on nuclear non-proliferation in partnership with the US Department of Energy/National Security Administration.

As part of the workshop, attendees were briefed about the Additional Protocol, a safeguards system by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure the peaceful use of nuclear materials. The workshop also provided information on materials and equipment that could be used to develop a nuclear weapons programme and the need to maintain stringent controls over such materials to ensure nuclear non-proliferation.

The UAE signed the Additional Protocol with the IAEA in 2009, which allows the agency to perform detailed verification activities in the UAE to confirm the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities. The Additional Protocol further strengthens the UAE’s commitment to non-proliferation while it develops its peaceful nuclear energy programme.

As part of its commitment to achieve the highest standards of non-proliferation, the UAE is applying a strict export control regime to block and respond effectively to illicit trade of nuclear material or equipment.
