Actor and newly minted Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Kamal Haasan made headlines recently with a high-profile meeting in Delhi. Sitting down with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Haasan took the opportunity to press for faster recognition of the historical significance of Keeladi, an ancient site near Madurai that holds deep cultural importance.

Sharing moments from the meeting on X (formerly Twitter), Haasan described the encounter as ‘an honour’ and highlighted his role as both a Tamil Nadu representative and an artist in bringing attention to this cause.

Accompanying the photos, Haasan wrote,

“Today, I had the honour of meeting the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi ji. As a representative of the people of Tamil Nadu and as an artist, I placed before him a few requests, foremost among them was the call to expedite the recognition of Keeladi's antiquity.” He added,

“I urged the Prime Minister to extend his support to the Tamil people in showcasing to the world the grandeur of Tamil civilisation and the timeless glory of the Tamil language.”

Kamal Haasan recently stepped into his role as Rajya Sabha MP, taking his oath in Tamil to a warm round of applause from fellow members. This marks his first national legislative role, having been nominated with the support of the DMK-led alliance, which promised him the Rajya Sabha seat in exchange for the MNM’s backing during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Haasan’s latest film, Thug Life, hit theaters in June this year. Directed by Mani Ratnam, the movie was released not only in Tamil but also in Telugu, Hindi, and Malayalam. The star-studded cast includes Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Nassar, Mahesh Manjrekar, and Ali Fazal, among others.
