The BJP has accused him of disrespecting the language and demanded a formal apology
Dubai: South Indian actor-politician Kamal Haasan has stood firm amid backlash over his recent comment suggesting that Kannada evolved from Tamil, saying his words were “born out of love” and rooted in historical understanding.
According to a report in The First Post, the actor who is expected to be in Dubai this June 5th to promote his upcoming film 'Thug Life', has refused to apologise for his controversial remarks.
His comments sparked a political uproar in Karnataka, with leaders across party lines demanding an apology.
According to CNN News 18, a formal complaint has also been filed over it. However, Haasan clarified that his statement had been misinterpreted and expressed no intention of retracting his words.
“What I said came from love, and after learning from many historians who taught me about the evolution of languages,” Haasan said, according to Firstpost. “Love never needs to apologise.”
The controversy erupted just as Haasan was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), after securing support from Tamil Nadu’s DMK, which offered the party one seat in the Upper House following their alliance during the 2024 general elections.
While the ruling Congress in Karnataka questioned Haasan’s understanding of Kannada’s legacy, the BJP accused him of disrespecting the language and demanded a formal apology.
In response, Haasan refrained from issuing one and instead emphasized the inclusive nature of Karnataka’s political landscape.
“Karnataka is a rare state,” he said. “It has seen a Menon as Chief Minister, a Reddy as Chief Minister, and even a Kannadiga. That kind of diversity is admirable.”
Haasan's upcoming film Thug Life is now at the center of controversy, with some groups threatening to disrupt its release unless he retracts his remarks.
Despite the growing tension, the actor has made it clear that he views his comments as a celebration of cultural history rather than an affront to linguistic identity.
