BTS's discography includes many painful songs that describe grief of different kinds.

If BTS can make you dance with Butter, they can just as easily break your heart with Butterfly.

That’s the bittersweet joy of being an ARMY, you willingly let songs hit you like a punch to the gut, only to gasp, “Ouch… but what a masterpiece.” It’s one of BTS’s trademarks: delivering music that moves you, wounds you, and stays with you. And sometimes, the story behind the song only deepens the ache.

(Being an ARMY is a wild, emotional joyride, hop on if you haven’t already.)

Here are 5 BTS songs that hit hard on the first listen, and hit harder once you learned the story behind them.

1)  Black Swan

It’s one of the most complicated, nuanced songs that they have ever produced. The song describes losing passion for artistry, as you grow more mechanical about it in time. “Do your thing, do your thing right now, what’s my thing, what’s my thing…” echoes. One of RM’s finest pen games in his career, and it’s a sentiment that he later elucidated several times In his career.

2) Fake Love

Yikes. This hurts. And probably more so, because you realise that this song was written at a time when BTS were at the peak of their career and were considering disbanding. The song wasn’t a romantic song by any means, it was also a relationship they were describing with themselves---they could’t love themselves properly at this time.

3) Danger

At the time of its release, Danger felt like a pumping, raging powerhouse of a song — all sharp beats and fluid rhythm. You loved it for its energy alone. But after the BTS book came out, a different layer emerged: behind that explosive performance were seven exhausted young boys, pouring every ounce of heart and soul into the track, only to realise they were still far from the top — and unsure how to get there.

4) Amygdala

Suga’s Amygdala is a raw, extension of the singer himself. The song and video takes you through his entire journey of healing, trying to ‘find a door’ as the video shows. It’s visceral, detailing his mother’s surgery, his own accident that left a scar on his shoulder. Many ARMYs still don’t watch the video, because it just hits too hard.

5)  Spring Day

No list is complete without the queen of heartache, ad Spring Day shows the pain of missing, yearning for someone till you finally meet them. It became the anthem for ARMY’s and the band, through all the seasons of military enlistment, and has gained deeper symbolism since their return, as proved by Jin’s tears at his last concert.
