You've bought the property of your dreams and you want it to be perfect; everything from the landscaping to its energy-efficiency. However, in the harsh climate of the UAE, where 50°C is often the norm at this time of year, air-conditioning systems work overtime to cool our properties. If it goes ignored, the added stress to the system can cause your air-conditioner to seize.
With the onset of summer, it's all the more important now to reduce energy costs by increasing the efficiency of your air-conditioning system.
"Air-conditioning units are like cars. Their lifespan depends on how well you take care of them," says Dustin Cherniawski, director of GreenWave Capital, a facilities management provider that has teamed up with Emrill to install Permafrost solution to air-conditioning systems in villas and apartments throughout the UAE. "An air-conditioner can last well beyond 15 years if maintained properly. But harsh environmental factors like sun, sand, salt and moisture often require that components be replaced along the way."
Homeowners investing in energy saving solutions for their properties can make substantial savings on energy costs within a year, says Dustin. You will save more than that amount in the first year alone, since you're not only cutting down on your immediate costs, but you're also helping the environment.
"Because electricity in the UAE is created by burning oil, this air-conditioner is responsible for nearly 1,300kg of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere, per month. A small villa (in an area such as The Springs) with five split air-conditioners can contribute over 75 tonnes of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere per year. That's the greenhouse gas equivalent of ten round trips from Dubai to London," he says.
